| METRO MAGAZINE REMEMBERED RUARK (October 2008) |
Bernie Reeves, editor and publisher of Metro Magazine must be an avid Robert Ruark fan. After all, he featured Ruark in his October 2008 edition of Metro; including a widly recognizable great cover photo of Ruark with his famous Remington typewriter. In addition to the "Rumble in the Jungle" article by Bill Morris, titled "The Life of Robert Ruark--North Carolina's Unsung Literary Legend," Bernie also wrote a column, "Forgotten Hero," found in the early pages of that edition, where he stressed that, at that time, Ruark had not been been inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame by his alma mater, UNC-Chapel Hill. Bernie also pointed out that alumnus Jim Cheatham, assisted by Bland Simpson, had established the Robert Ruark Society to resurrect the great writer's larger-than-life adventure.
Being his "usual charming self," Bernie did not even bat an eye when the society asked for permission to post the Metro Magazine article by Morris, published in 2008. Less than two hours after the society's query was emailed to his attention, he responed, granting permisssion to use the article. He also noted that David Gough, Metro's art director would provide the society with the material for posting.
We are pleased to share the Metro article with our viewers and we hope that Bernie will report in a subsequent edition that Robert Ruark is now, indeed, a member of the N. C. Journalism Hall of Fame. Additionally, the society wants Metro readers and others to know there is no dues/fees associated with membership in the Robert Ruark Society. All potential members are welcome to join the society and assist with its mission to resurrect the Ruark adventure!
